After the L-Test...

You've passed your L-test and can't wait to get your first car. You want the kind of independence that only comes with having your own set of wheels.

But the cost of insurance is sky high !!

Before we get to the answer, let's explore the facts why ...

1 in 3 male drivers - aged 17-20 have a serious crash within 2 years of passing their L-Test

Passengers in vehicles driven by (young) newly qualified drivers run a higher risk of being killed or injured

Inexperienced drivers take upto 2 seconds longer to recognise possible danger than those with more experience.

In an accident young male drivers are 9 times more likely to be at fault

Young drivers, especially males, consistently overestimate their ability - speed too high, gaps too short, out of position on road, inattention.

A collision is 4 times more likely if you drive while making a mobile phone call

So let's look at why this can happen ...

A newly-qualified driver might have been in normal driving situations for as little as 25 hours; changed gear possibly 1000 times; seen fewer than 20% of the 'road signs and markings'; never stopped in an real emergency; never driven at night, never controlled a skid, tyre blowout, had to avoid a collision; never driven in heavy rain (or mist/fog/snow..), driven only within 10miles of home, had to navigate a route as well as drive, etc...

In contrast a 2-year driver will have probably driven for 1000-2000 hours, changed gear 20000 times, driven on all types of roads and in different traffic densities, had to navigate through an unknown town/city, experienced varied weather conditions and learned to handle distractions (within the car and outside)

It's easy to see from these facts that there's no substitute for experience, however there is a partial answer..

Pass Plus - backed by Insurance companies, Central Government and the Driving Standards Agency. - is designed to inject experience into the newly-qualified driver and so help you avoid being part of a gruesome statistic.

The majority of Insurers will give you a 1 year no-claims discount (typically 35-40%) when you send them your PassPlus certificate. And if you're not going to be driving on your own insurance for a while (saving up for a car of your own!) then you can defer the no-claims discount for upto a year.
